Coyote Springs Trail Runs (50K)
Coyote Springs Trail Runs are set amid the master-planned Coyote Springs community, approximately sixty miles north of Las Vegas.
The inaugural running of the Coyote Springs Ultra Series is a race to not be missed. Aside from offering runners the unique opportunity to christen a new course, Coyote’s trails have been hand-cut by Pardee Homes Vice President Klif Andrews and the “trail hobos,” a group of near-mountain men as rugged as the terrain itself, who make their lives in the backwoods and brush; their appreciation for nature and the thrill of challenging trail has resulted in a system both original in layout and design as well as painstakingly maintained. Paired with the expertise and innovation of Desert Sky Adventures, the resulting course will leave runners awe-inspired and breathless, even before the gun goes off.
What: 50K on trails
When: Saturday, March 12, 2011 - 7:00 AM
Where: Coyote Springs
Beautiful weather is expected for race day: partly-cloudy, with no precipitation and a high of 74 degrees.
Please note that race start time has been moved to 7am to allow participants a more-comfortable drive from Las Vegas. Runners may still check in and register beginning at 5am.
Following the race, a complimentary barbeque will be offered for all participants and attendees, as available. The course and staging area will close at 7pm.
Course:
The course traverses the gamut of trail terrain, including fire roads, dirt and paved roads, single-track trails, steep as well as gradual climbs and descents, scenic switchbacks, rocky roundabouts, deep canyons, and vast expanses of desert landscape. Both distances are a single-loop course.
The variety of the course and terrain naturally allows each participant to tailor their experience to be commensurate with their skill, experience, and goals for the race. With a regal mountain backdrop, unparalleled views of earth and sky, and the variety among the terrain, runners will easily lose themselves in the beautiful scenery and epic experience. Cresting hills and sailing down switchbacks with previously-unthought-of speed and ease, participants will feed from the serenity and splendor of the landscape, thereby making Coyote Springs the perfect option for new ultra- or trail-runners wanting to cut their teeth on a variety of terrain, as well as more seasoned runners looking to escape the routine and comfort of the tried-and-true courses, or for a masters class in trail with impressive PR potential.
As expected with the rugged landscape, trail shoes are strongly recommended, and gaiters are encouraged. Much of the course is surrounded by as-yet-unadulterated desert landscape, including cacti and wildlife habitats, so participants should be prepared for the likelihood of encountering common desert critters.
Participants will be required to remain on the trails and within the course boundaries so as to not disturb the natural surroundings. Runners need be conscious of the terrain and exercise care in foot placement.
As with all Coyote Springs Trail Runs, the course will be liberally-marked to ensure participant safety, participant adherence to the course, and ease of following the course, as well as to entertain and encourage. (Dirty Runners Are Sexy!)
After feedback following the Inaugural Coyote Springs 50K in November, the course has been modified to give you more of what you really want: canyon trail! After a short out-and-back at the start, the distance will be comprised by twice following a figure-eight loop: the top of the loop being four up-and-down fingers through the canyons, finishing with a smaller bottom loop of an approximately-2.5 mile flat.
From the staging area (green star), the course begins with a short out-and-back of less than a mile on a wide road of dirt and rock. Runners then head for the hills across a three-quarter mile desert expanse—watch for snakes, tumbleweeds, and desert chipmunks here—to the base of the canyons. A series of switchbacks begin the 4.25-mile ascent (leg 2) to the Old Highway and a short stretch of paved road. Runners meet the first aid station after a half-mile, just prior to beginning the first descent (leg 3).
More switchbacks await heading up leg 4 as the course climbs back to the Old Highway and a touch-and-go at the second aid station. Once heading back down the outer leg 5, runners careen through the canyons until crossing the bridge, after which they veer left on the outer turn of leg 6 and the approximately-two mile flat loop on wide dirt roads, returning them to the staging area and the start/finish aid station.
From here, runners will omit the initial out-and-back and instead, immediately return back across the desert, into the canyons, and up to the Old Highway.
Each loop consists of approximately 1550 feet of total gain.
Runners are free to place drop bags and receive support from crews at all three aid stations. Aid stations will offer water and lemon-lime Gatorade, as well as a variety of food. Restrooms are available at the staging area, but there are no restrooms along the course.
The trails will be marked liberally in bright green chalk, and orange cones will denote the course on the dirt roads. The trails are very easy to follow, due to the barrenness of the landscape and the care in which they were cut, but runners should still pay attention to markings, particularly at the junctions. Runners need also pay attention to foot placement, as much of the trail is rocky and surrounded by brush. Trail shoes are strongly recommended, and gaiters encouraged.
Weather:
The early-March running will take advantage of the temperate Las Vegas-area climate. Forecast for race day is a high of 69° F and a low of 44° F, with no precipitation. However, temperatures may be slightly cooler on the course, given the proximity to the mountains.
Aid Stations:
Aid stations will be located along the course and will offer a variety of fuel and hydration options in addition to water and the usual suspects; however, due to the remote location and environmental constraints, distance between aid stations may be greater than typical. Aid station location will range between 5- and 10-mile distances. As such, participants are encouraged to carry their own fluid and fuel and must retain all garbage for proper disposal at an aid station or the staging area. Under no circumstances should any trash or other litter be left out on the course.
Support Crews & Pacers:
Support crews are allowed, but will have access to the runners only from a few locations. Specific information on these locations will be posted as the event date approaches.
Due to environmental considerations and the need to preserve the integrity of the trails and surroundings, pacers will not be allowed on the course. All participants must register.
Performance Rules:
- Runners must wear their official race number on the front of the body—not on the hat—where it must be visible at all times.
- Each runner must complete the entire 50K course under their own power in order to be eligible for a medal.
- Each runner must carry all their own food, fluids and other supplies needed for use between aid stations.
- Runners may not accept aid from their support crew or any other source while on the course and in between aid stations and designated support locations, except in case of a medical emergency.
- Any entrant who is unable or does not desire to finish the race must continue to the nearest aid station. The runner must relinquish their race number to the aid station captain and state their decision to withdraw.
- Absolutely no littering. Please respect the natural beauty of our trails and the rights of everyone to enjoy them.
Travel & Lodging:
Participants traveling by air will arrive at McCarran International Airport. The array of Las Vegas lodging options are available, but DSA recommends Suncoast Hotel and Casino or Aliante Station, as they are the hotel/casinos closest to Coyote Springs in Las Vegas. Suncoast offers free shuttle service from McCarran, for which guests must schedule in advance. Participants wishing to carpool can contact Desert Sky Adventures with their request and lodging and contact information and DSA will attempt to facilitate contact for participants to make arrangements.
Approximately equidistant from Coyote Springs as Las Vegas is Mesquite, Nevada. Hotel options there include the CasaBlanca Hotel and Casino, Virgin River Hotel and Casino, and the Falcon Ridge Hotel. Mesquite is 81 miles north of Las Vegas and 57 miles from Coyote Springs.
Camping is permitted onsite; however, there are no services or facilities in the area. Room for motorhomes is available near the start/finish area and the use of these is welcomed.
In addition to the bevy of entertainment options available in Las Vegas, participants can also take advantage of a golf package offered by The Chase at Coyote Springs, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, recognized as his finest design and one of the top new courses in the United States.
